Creating a unique OTT platform for a popular visual effects studio.

TLDR— As a Product Design Consultant, I worked closely with the Corridor team to create a truly unique experience for their audience. I partnered with the team at Protostream to create a personalized OTT platform leveraging ‘producer points’ to further boost engagement allowing users to use their points towards getting shows made.

With Producer Points being a compelling reason for their existing YouTube subs to come and try out the new platform, we’ve established a product that exponentially improves as we continue to listen to our users.

Overview

With the popularity of Corridor Crew’s YouTube channel (5 million subs), the team wanted to further enhance their audience’s experience with their content. Enter their own personalized OTT platform. Working with my friends at Protostream, we designed a new take on their experimental platform. With the bones and core features in place, my role was to rethink (quickly) the overall UX to make the platform more engaging and user friendly.

Outcome

After the redesign, subscriptions climbed 24% in 3 months. The app continues to get great reviews (4.5 in iOS store) and comments have been positive overall. I love working with the team at Corridor because of their amazing energy and humble approach. The product grows and matures blazingly fast, ripping through releases. With that said, we are constantly fixing what we lovingly call ‘the jank’.

Marketing pages on the responsive web experience.

Bridging, educating, and value prop-ing

As part of the initial re-launch, the responsive web app was the first to get love. Like most web solutions with an app counterpart, we had to create compelling and straightforward marketing pages to help sell the vision. From an IA perspective, we had to solve for anonymous and logged-in users—deciding what gets shown to who.

Highlights:

  • After the redesign, subscribers climbed 24% in 3 months

  • Producer Points being a HUGE value prop to bring in existing subs

  • We found the perfect balance of familiar UI and their trademark creative.

Creating for a loyal (and vocal) fanbase

Like most big YouTube talent, a massive and very vocal community comes included. Every design decision and eng execution gets scrutinized and gets blasted out to millions. We used that as a boon to further make an experience that resonates with Corridor’s fans. We iterated super fast and stayed plugged-in to our users.

The Takeaway

Corridor Digital’s OTT platform is the perfect example of having fun while doing what you love. Partnering with Corridor and Protostream to quickly iterate on features is a great mix of chaos, frenetic pace, and constant learning. Having over 5 years experience in the VOD space gives me the authority to drive design but adapting to the evolving needs of a vibrant community easily keeps me on my toes.

Common conventions and best practices are good, but sometimes, breaking the rules just works.
